Something New (An Introduction)

When I was in college, I hated writing. Papers, reports, presentations – as far as I was concerned they were slave labor. Then in my final semester of my senior year I took a class called Advanced Expository Writing which, to me, sounded like an extended definition of death. Contrary to my pre-conceived notions, the class turned out to be one of the best I had in college. The difference was that I was able to write about things that inspired me, moved me, and affected me in ways unlike the subjects of prior dry essays.
When Chad (the owner) asked me to start writing this blog for Hutch Design, I was excited to expound on a fantastic company through the art of writing. That said, this inaugural post serves two purposes. The first being to introduce myself. The second being to provide a scope of this blog through the above quote. But first...
A little about me. I graduated from North Greenville University with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Broadcast Media and Business Administration. While it may be a mouthful, my degree and the professors who shaped it greatly impacted the way I work, think, play, and interact with others. Specifically, I learned how to integrate disciplines in order to solve a problem. Other students learned facts and knowledge, but my professors taught me to make a head-heart connection with what I'm learning, and for that I am very grateful.
At Hutch Design, I manage media, CAD drafting, gate operators, and our 3d printer. I am extremely grateful for the variety my job allows. Most people are stuck in a rut of doing the same thing day in and day out, but in my job I'm always learning and experiencing something new and exciting. Throw in the fact that I get to work with fantastic co-workers and customers and it could easily be called a dream job.
Aside from that I enjoy more interests than you probably care to read over. But a select few are backpacking, adventure seeking, reading, astrophotography, audio production, and woodworking. Soundtrack music and good food are essential.
The Scope
To put things in perspective for this blog, I've included one of my favorite quotes. It challenges me to think differently – to take a risk in pursuit of something new. If you're thinking, "How can anybody write a blog about metalworking," then I issue you the same challenge I receive from that quote. Thinking differently about metal work and craftsmanship might just give you new insight into other areas of life. That is the essence of Interdisciplinary Studies – drawing parallels between two things that seem unrelated yet somehow reach deeper into our humanity than we realize.
